Young
Single mothers self help group is both local women focused and pro- poor
network that is comprised of over 22 young women-individuals. Specifically the
initiative is currently based in Kianda Village within the kibera poor slum
area. Ysmeg was founded as a response to the inadequate visibility of voiceless
young women in job procurement and development processes i.e. decision making
forums which directly impact them and their communities. Its genesis was
demand driven and the main vision behind the organization was to train young
people on Basic skills in computing and set up cyber café with bureau services
I e printing, typing, photocopying, document binding and other services, bead
work and also to build a strong young women’s movement that bridged the latter
gap through women led and community driven interventions that focused on
sustainable development. The organization continues to hold a vision in which
women and their children are able to participate effectively in their own
development, while the organization’s mission is to provide vocational training
in order to facilitate grassroots women to procure self employment in their
community to effectively in holistic sustainable development processes in all
spheres of life that is social and economic also to be able to sponsor the
young children from the teen age mothers to a quire basic education. The
project is located in Kibera poor slum with a population ranging from 250,000
to one million according to the last government count 2009, each house
currently occupied by at least four to seven members of each family, the mad
houses are small as 10 by 10, the major problem is lack of employment among the
young women and youths in general and more problem to the teen age
mothers whom could not support their children to school to acquire basic
education and even feed them, this has forced many young ladies to survive on
their bodies sale i.e. prostitution which is dangerous to their health
due to high rate of illiteracy and something needs to be done in
order to reduce this problem, Due to lager population and unemployment in the
region many young women and the youths have engaged themselves in bad
activities like prostitution ,drags, rape and stealing/mugging which has made
the place to be volatile to the people leaving there.
